60 Seconds with SICHI…

SICHI PROFILE

SICHI is a DJ/Producer and label owner who has had 15 years already in the industry, mostly in the breaks scene under a number of aliases. Now working on his new project Dichotomic Records, we caught up with the man to find out more about his future plans…

Hey, how’s things in life right now and how has your summer been? Any highlights to share?

Hello. Everything is going pretty well at the moment and keeping myself quite busy with music related activities. This summer I’ve been producing a few tracks, and also very focused on my record label, Dichotomic our new born little baby and iBreaks, a very well established breaks label which has been running for over 10 years now.

For those of our readers that may not be too familiar with your work, how would you describe your sound in three words?

Underground, intense, distinctive.

Which artists would you say you take most of your inspiration from, both from the past and present?

Well, I think I get inspired from every single piece of music I hear. Every single track out there has something interesting to learn from. Sometimes it could be an arrangement, other times a bit of harmony, or interesting ideas. I really can’t talk about names in particular really because there’s so many people out there at the moment producing good stuff. Actually if I have to mention an artist who really impress me every single time, it is going to have to be Alexic Rod. Coming from the breaks scene too, his approach to tech house is quite unique and brilliant.

Was there a defining moment in your life that made you want to be a DJ/producer? Has it always been house and techno from day one?

Well, yeah there was… For this you have to go back to 1996, in Tenerife (Spain), where I was born. I got so hooked up to the old-school breaks (hardcore) sounds, that I decided there and then that I wanted to start producing music. So I got my first release on vinyl in 1997 under the name of Sigma 7. Since then, I’ve released quite a lot of music under different aliases. At the beginning I focused in breaks style, but more recently I’ve started investigating the sounds of tech house, minimal house, deep tech and so on from a production point of view, and I’m pretty surprised and excited about how infinite these styles are too.

When working on a track, do you follow the same procedure or is it different every time?

Every time I start a track, I start from scratch and I don’t really know where the track is going to drive me. I have no patterns, templates or even a system. I like to improvise while producing and let the track itself evolve in a natural way. I think this is a good technique to avoid getting bored while producing.

Your EP ‘I Got Soul’ is set for release on Dichotomic Records, what did you set out to achieve with this and do you feel you have done so?

This is my first original track on the label, and with this track I was looking to blend very powerful beats / bass, with slightly deeper elements making a balanced combination. I also wanted to include some old school elements , and this was done via Rakim samples. I think I achieved the balance I was looking for, so I’m pretty happy with the result.

Have you had the chance to test the two tracks out on the road? What has the reaction been like and does one tune go off more than the other?

Nope, I haven’t had the chance. It is early days for my SICHI avatar, but I’m sure I’ll be out and about sooner than later.

Looking back at your childhood, did you have an upbringing that was rich in music? If so how do you think that has shaped the sound you produce today?

I’ve studied some music theory when I was a kid, and my father was a music maniac, he also played a couple of instruments. I’ve always seen music like a very unique way to express yourself, I really believe you can make music based in your personal energy, feelings and portrait that into your tracks.

If you could go back in time and give yourself some advice, what would it be?

Do exactly what I’ve done. I’m quite proud of my music career so far, just shy of 20 years already dedicated to this industry… No regrets at all there.

Outside of electronic music what do you find yourself listening to? How does this affect your sound?

I’m mainly a electronic music listener. Not a fan of rock, pop or any other non-electronic styles.

What are your top 5 tracks right now?
