Record Of The Day: Gunn – Shallow (Subdrive)
Artist – Gunn
Title – Shallow
Label – Subdrive
Release Date – 26th February 2016
Subdrive keep up the pressure with a great new single from Scottish producer Gunn. He serves up a great original that is one of many he has contributed to the label over the course of the last couple of years, and it is sure to be another winner.
Famed for his lush pads and deep grooves, the producer has been cooking up the club hits since his youth and is now climbing through the ranks on an ever faster basis. As well as getting media props, many taste making DJs are reaching for his records and in 2014 he grabbed a spot on Vol 95 of Team Supreme’s popular weekly beat cypher series.
This latest track, Shallow, is a lively and expressive house cut with colourful synths dancing about above a grizzly, frazzled bassline. The drums are slick and fresh, the percussive explosions add real drama and some well treated vocals finish the thing off in style. Produced with real know how, it is sure to be a standout in any set.
This is modern house music at its best!

Describe the record in five words.
Funky basement banger, with fries.
What is it about the record that will appeal to the fans?
The bassline! It’s big, groovy and dirty – the pefect recipe for that instant urge to get up and dance.
How does it differ from your last release?
It’s much more focused. I generally go in for pretty complex, in-depth arrangements but for this one I wanted the groove to be center stage so I sacrificed a lot more to the cutting room floor than I typically would. Each element in the track is aimed at presenting the bassline in the best possible light – anything that didn’t help with this got canned.
What was the inspiration for this release?
Clubs, parties, friends. I wanted to make a track that can always get the good vibes flowing.
If you had the chance to play this in any club, which would it be?
If we’re fantasising, I’d love to play this on a summer evening at an outdoor festival. The air is warm, the drinks are cold, everyone looks happy. Maybe I’m straying into anticipating summer in general a bit here…
Shallow is set for release February 26th on the Subdrive imprint.
